Peak Performance Buoyancy

Whatever kind of diving you do, neutral buoyancy is essential, for you and for the environment. It is one of the first things we learn, and it takes a lot of practice.

At a glance

Trim, weighting, streamlining and breathing. Move in any direction with minimal effort.

Prerequisite
Certified diver

Why it matters

Slightly negative
You touch the bottom. You can damage fragile life such as corals, get scraped or stung by animals defending themselves, damage your kit, and stir up silt that ruins visibility for everyone.
Slightly positive
You use more air because you keep swimming down to hold your depth, and you risk an uncontrolled ascent with all its consequences.

Wrecks, caves or underwater photography: almost every kind of diving needs precise buoyancy control.

What you will learn

Behind perfect buoyancy are a few secrets: trim and correct weighting, streamlining and breathing. You also learn new fin kicks and how to move in every direction with as little effort as possible.
